    Expert panel to advise on apprenticeship reforms

    Education Minister, Simon Crean, announced that an expert panel has been established to advise the Government on reform options for the Australian Apprenticeships system. The seven member Apprenticeships for the 21st Century Panel will be chaired by Mr Jim McDowell and includes industry and union representatives and academics. The panel will examine training arrangements to improve outcomes for apprentices and industry. It will report to Government by the end of 2010.

    Outcome of consultations on transparency and accountability for ISP filtering of RC content

    The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, announced a comprehensive suite of transparency and accountability measures to accompany the introduction of ISP filtering of Refused Classification content. The Government also announced it will recommend a review of the Refused Classification guidelines to the States and Territories and welcomed support from the major Internet Service Providers to block a list of child abuse URLs.

    Review of school funding - final terms of reference

    Education Minister Simon Crean has released the final Terms of Reference for the first comprehensive Government review of school funding in over 30 years. Mr Crean said the Review of Funding for Schooling will consider how schools in Australia are funded in the future and lay the foundation for ongoing investment in the sector.     New IP content services taking off in Australia

    A new report released by the Australian Communications and Media Authority confirms that Australians are increasingly able to view video content on their own terms, including when, where and how they want it. The report is part of the ACMA's ongoing research program into the application of emerging technologies. ACMA, 30 June 2010.

    Classroom uses of social network sites: Traditional practices or new literacies?

    This study examined the practices of two teachers who had chosen to use the social network site Ning to create online classrooms as supplements to their physical classrooms in order to bridge the self and school-selected literacies of students. The study further aimed to identify whether the ways in which the teachers were using Ning constituted literacy practices that were new.

    The future of cloud computing

    Technology experts and stakeholders say they expect they will ?live mostly in the cloud? in 2020 and not on the desktop, working mostly through cyberspace-based applications accessed through networked devices. This will substantially advance mobile connectivity through smartphones and other internet appliances. Many say there will be a cloud-desktop hybrid. Still, cloud computing has many difficult hurdles to overcome, including concerns tied to the availability of broadband spectrum, the ability of diverse systems to work together, security, privacy, and quality of service.

    Mainstreaming education for sustainability in pre-service teacher education in Australia

    This study is the third stage in a project to mainstream education for sustainability (EfS) in pre-service teacher education. The project began with a review of change processes to identify an effective model. The whole-of-system/action research model of effective change was then piloted in the Queensland education system. The report presents the findings of a further pilot project to test this model and to identify enablers and constraints to mainstreaming EfS in New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT ) teacher education systems.

    Using interactive whiteboards in pre-service teacher education: Examples from two Australian universities

    Research indicates that when interactive whiteboards are used well they can increase student engagement and learning. This paper examines examples of how interactive whiteboards can be used in teacher education as well as how to integrate their use across courses that pre-service teachers undertake.
